Your Mama is on Facebook

Today, social media is omnipresent and trendy. Social network tools make it easy to stay in touch, be up-to-date, market yourself and have a voice in the immensity of the Internet.

In order to make the use of social media a great experience there are some common mistakes to avoid:

  • You will be seen. Potential employers will search for you on the Internet and you want to make a good lasting first impression. According to a recent Career Builder survey, 45 percent of employers reported searching potential employees on social networking sites.
  • Be intentional of how you are portrayed. Whether it’s on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn, you will be held accountable for the things that are said on your page and you will be associated with the pictures that you share. Remember that the potential employer who is looking you up only knows you through your résumé; the way you present yourself online can be a make or break a deal.
  • Avoid sharing any pictures or saying things that you would not show your mother or grandmother.
  • Beware of whom you befriend. You could quickly be associated with the people who surround your online account and it will not always be to your advantage.

Social networking tools are a brilliant way to market yourself and be accessible, but a wrong usage of them can severely harm you. In this new technological age, privacy should remain essential. Having a presence on the Internet should not deprive you from using privacy safeguards to ensure that what you want to be private remains private. Take pride in who you are and remember, your Mama’s on Facebook.
